Our Story

Founded in 2010 in Mount Pleasant, Buxton & Collie was built around the kind of legal counsel business owners need most: a steady point of contact who understands the transaction, the people involved, and the long-term plan behind the decision

Buxton & Collie was founded shortly after the recession, when Jim Buxton left the large law firm path to build a business law firm around three clients who needed more than just one-off legal tasks.

Those early clients used Jim much like outside general counsel. They needed a point person who could help negotiate with other lawyers, coordinate with professional advisors, and understand how legal decisions fit into the larger business picture and strategic goals. That role became part of the firm’s foundation.

Today, Buxton & Collie is a boutique transactional law firm serving clients locally, nationally, and internationally. Our work has grown with the clients we serve, including established businesses, closely held companies, family enterprises, investors, and owners in the small and lower middle market, often in the $3 million to $50 million revenue range.

As the firm has matured, so has the work. We intentionally focus on business law, real estate law, and the transactions where structure, timing, judgment, and advisor coordination matter. We do not try to do everything. Instead, we focus on what we do well and help bring in the right professionals when a matter calls for additional guidance.

Many clients come to us for one transaction and continue working with us for years. That long-term view has shaped our approach to business sales and purchases, corporate planning, commercial real estate, private offerings, residential closings, and outside general counsel relationships.

Our attorneys have also helped shape business law resources used beyond our own firm. In 2018, our partners co-authored the South Carolina Business Law Handbook, and revised the handbook for a Second Edition as published through the South Carolina Bar. In 2026, attorneys Jim Buxton, Nate Johnson, and Sarah Glasgow were selected to contribute to Thomson Reuters’ Westlaw Practical Law resource, “Corporation Law: South Carolina.”

That history reflects what Buxton & Collie has been built to provide from the beginning: focused transactional counsel for clients making serious business and real estate decisions.

The Buxton & Collie Standard

Focused Transactional Counsel

Business and real estate transactions are the center of our work. That focus allows us to bring practical judgment to the documents, negotiations, timing, and decisions that move a matter forward.

Experience With Significant Deals

Buxton & Collie’s work spans local businesses, regional projects, and national or international clients with interests in South Carolina. That range helps us understand the practical details behind each transaction, from structure and timing to relationships and long-term plans.

Long-Term Legal Relationships

Many clients come to us for one matter and continue working with us for years. We often serve as outside general counsel, helping businesses plan, coordinate, and make informed decisions as they grow.

Supporting the Business Communities That Move South Carolina Forward

Buxton & Collie’s work is closely tied to the success of South Carolina’s business community. We advise the owners, companies, investors, lenders, developers, and real estate clients who help shape the state’s growth.

From Charleston and Mount Pleasant to Columbia, Greenville, and the Upstate, we understand that strong legal guidance can support more than a single transaction. It can help businesses expand, preserve value, invest wisely, and build lasting relationships in the communities where they operate.
